FIGHT THE FLU!

One of the most miserable winter experiences is about with the flu, but there are some ways to minimize the risk for yourself and others. At Insignia Senior Living, Associates are trained to prevent the flu. Should a resident contract the flu we are there 24/7 to ensure they have the best care and recover quickly.

1. Get a Seasonal Flu Shot

According to the CDC, a seasonal flu vaccine can reduce the risk of contracting the flu by as much as 60% but talk with your doctor.

2. Wash Your Hands

Wow, our hands touch countless items all day long and washing them is perhaps the best way to avoid the germs that cause the flu. Wash them regularly throughout the day with soap and water and if you don’t have soap use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

3. Cover Your Mouth When You Cough or Sneeze

Influenza is transmitted via droplets largely from coughs and sneezes. Cough into a sleeve or tissue that you can toss immediately rather than covering your mouth or nose with your hand.

4. Clean Frequently Touched Surfaces

Sanitizing handrails, table tops, counters, and other frequently touched surfaces kills the germs that transmit the disease.

5. Take Antiviral Meds if Prescribed

If your physician recommends taking these medications they can reduce the severity and duration of the illness should you contract it.

6. Take Care of Yourself

Keeping a strong immune system from proper rest and nutritious food can help your body fight disease including the flu. Older adults who live alone often fail to get proper nutrition, making them more vulnerable to disease.
